What to Expect During Intensive Outpatient Treatment?

The IOP, or Intensive Outpatient Program at Bridge Street Recovery in New Hampshire, is a therapeutic program designed to combine the advantages of inpatient care while allowing patients to go home to their familiar environment at the end of the day.

Patients can expect to devote 10 to 20 hours to IOP treatment in New Hampshire each week and visit our care facility three to four times a week. The amount of time dedicated to an IOP is why it is “intensive”, but patients benefit from being able to be with family and loved ones during the rest of the week. IOPs are ideal for those with work or school commitments who need a regimented program, but cannot commit to our residential program.

Our New Hamshire-based IOP will work best for patients that have stable and safe home environments that do not trigger their mental health issues in any way.

If a patient is entering our IOP to deal with an addiction problem, but then goes to a home where their family and friends are engaged in the same addictive behaviors, IOP might not be the right answer for them.

In those cases, we suggest our PHP / residential treatments.

What is the Intensive Outpatient Program at Bridge Street Recovery?

When participating in Bridge Street Recovery’s IOP, patients spend part of the day going through their usual routines of work, family, or school.

The patient then arrives at Bridge Street Recovery’s Intensive Outpatient Program facility in New Hampshire to participate in group and individual therapies, as well as education classes, centered on issues related to their mental health disorder.

Treatment for substance abuse, alcoholism, and other addictions will include proven recovery methods.

Supplemental activities include exercise, prayer, meditation, and more. Some IOP patients may also include career and life training.

The overall goal of our IOP in New England is to get a patient to a place where he or she is able to access and leverage better coping mechanisms when confronted with triggers.

Therapy in IOP -

Group therapy tends to serve as the core of most IOPs. Some studies show group participation is as effective as individual therapy in treating addiction.

Participation in a group offers support for clients in a variety of ways.

  • It offers clients the chance to enhance their communication skills and provides a new resource for socialization. This is especially important in addiction, as individuals’ previous socialization is often with others who use drugs or alcohol.

  • It gives participants access to an environment where people in similar situations provide support, comfort, and honest feedback.

  • It can reinforce healthful ways of interacting and provide a safe space that is vital to recovery efforts.

  • Group members who are farther along in their recovery often offer valuable assistance and empathy to those who are early in the recovery process.

  • It provides a forum for therapists and group leaders to pass on important information, teach new skills, and guide clients.

  • Groups can be a place to witness more positive behaviors associated with recovery and to practice new modes of dealing with addiction.

The group sessions in which clients participate are of varying types in order to address a range of treatments and skills required for a successful recovery from addiction.
